Years ago, the Apostle Paul kind of sent an email to Timothy. Towards the bottom of the email, Paul wrote - "[God] is the blessed and only Soverign, the King of Kings, and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see, to Him be honor and eternal power." And just to make sure I haven't already confused anybody, I just read from I Timothy chapter 6.
So this verse has a phrase that's been on my mind for I dont know how many weeks. For some reason I never looked it up like I usually would, but it constantly kept coming back to my mind. And then earlier this week, I was finishing up reading through Pauls email to Timothy and came across this verse. The clause that's kept coming to mind is
"God who lives in unapproachable light."
"God who lives in unapproachable light."
"God who lives in unapproachable light."
I've often heard and thought about how God is a loving Father who's basically always "nice". I think I've also subconsciously often thought of God as someone there to help me do what I want to do. But that's so far from the truth.
Cause here it says "God who dwells in unapproachable light". Its "unapproachable" because no human can dare head towards God and expect to live. If we we're to walk towards God on our own, then Gods purity and light and perfection would burn through my imperfections so rapidly and thoroughly that I would die. Yet there are zero imperfections in God.
At work, there are bosses and managers of numerous ranks. When the military has meetings with Captains, everybody scrambles and works really hard at presenting the best. When it's with an Admiral or Rear Admiral you have to be even more perfect with what you present to them. You have to check the information a million times and you have to make sure a million other leaders also agree. They have to control who's allowed to talk and even allowed to be seen at the meeting. The ranks of these military officers are too high for most employees to be near.
But God is light years of ranks above all of these men and women. The high ranking people of the world are like like minions compared to Gods perfection. No one should be allowed to approach God. At all. Ever.
But the highest ranking power in the entire world, or the highest ranking power in the entire universe reached down to me. Its not that I went to God's office, but that God remained in office, and not only did God reach out to me, but He even adopted me into His very own family. And this stark contrast between God's majesty and the multitudes of my imperfection are one of the many reasons I am in awe. Not awe because of how unworthy I am, but awe because of how amazing God is to reach down to the lowest of the low.
So without God's adoption as sons/daughters of God, He is so high ranking that He is unapproachable. Yet when God saves a sinner, Jesus enables us to approach the throne of God. God is that merciful. God is that powerful. God is that wonderful. So let's humbly, yet confidently pray ...
